Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State (Seniors) designated October 1 as National Seniors Day (NSD) through the bill “Celebrating Canada’s Seniors Act”. The bill and the NSD are an honour for and recognition of the contributions of the older Canadians as builders of the country.
The October 1 celebration coincides with the International Day of Older Persons.
Ablonczy acknowledged that, “Our government is proud of Canada's seniors. They built our country, and deserve our thanks. National Seniors Day will be an occasion to honour older Canadians and show our appreciation for their contributions to our country."
The announcement was made during the National Seniors Council (NSC) annual meeting headed by Mr. Jean-Guy Soulière, Chair of NSC. Ablonsczy added that, “Canada's seniors are more active, healthier and living longer than ever before, and therefore many will be working past the age of 60. That is why I have asked the National Seniors Council to look at two new priorities: labour force participation and intergenerational relations.”
